This Chappati or Phulka is made commonly in all the houses for their everyday meal in India. This is more consumed in Northern part of India when compared to Southern part. They have this flat bread with some Indian curries. It is very simple to make and healthy too. Lets get into the recipe...😊😊
Serves :- 3 people
Preparation time :- 5 mins
Cooking time :- 15 mins
Measurements :- in grams and in spoons
*tbsp - Tablespoon
*tsp - Teaspoon
Ingredients
- Whole wheat flour - 270 gram / 1 cups + ¾ cup
- Salt - 7 gram / 2 tsp
- Water - 200 ml / ¾ cup (approximately)
I would suggest you to follow the steps one by one exactly to get the soft and fluffy chappati. If possible get the flour from Indian store. If not choose the flour type 1050 or 1600. This recipe makes approximately 10-12 chappati. You can store this in tight box and stays fresh for 36 hours.
Method
- In a bowl add the flour and salt, then mix it gently with your fingers.
- Then add water little by little to the flour and gently mix the flour with your fingers.
- Once the flour is almost wet with water, start kneading the dough for 3 minutes as shown in the video below to make a soft smooth dough. Then cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes take the dough, just knead it one last time and make small lemon sized balls as shown in the picture.
- Take ¾ cup of flour in a separate plate or bowl for dusting.
- Now keep the wide pan on the stove and heat it up high. For making chappati the pan has to be very hot.
- While the pan is heating up, take one dough ball, dust it with flour and start rolling as shown in the video below.
- Make sure that you roll it gently and evenly on all sides. Do not roll harder. When you feel like the dough sticking to your rolling pin while rolling then dust with flour. Your chappati has to be in even thickness on all sides only then it will puff up (thickness of one greeting card). Do not worry if it is not even or it does not puffs up. Little practice will make you perfect 👍😉
- Then put this rolled chappati on the pan. When the bottom part starts bubbling turn it over on the other side.
- When the other side starts bubbling then again turn it over and press it gently on all sides. Immediately the chappati starts puffing up. Then take it out and apply some butter or ghee on it if you like
